Dinner with a Hero – Silvia Violet – Setiwan

Sep 9, 2011 Filed under: book release, erotica, m/m, paranormal, recipes, shapeshifter, sweet treats

If I’m not writing or reading, you’ll likely find me in the kitchen trying out a new recipe or baking up sweet treats. I have a deep and abiding love for food. I think eating a really good chocolate cake is one of the most erotic experiences anyone can have. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that as I get to know my characters one of the first things I ask them is what they like to eat.

These details don’t always make it into my books, but I can’t really understand a man until I know what I would cook for him if he came to dinner at my house. I’ve asked some of my favorite authors to join me in making dinner for a character of their choice. Each week, one of us will be sharing a little about one of my heroes and a dinner I would make for him.

Today I’m cooking for Setiwan, one of the heroes of my latest release, Reef’s Guardian. He’s a Guardian, a magical creature who has a human form but can also take the form of any creature who lives on or around the coral reef his family is sworn to protect. When underwater he prefers the form of a cuttlefish, a blacktip reef shark or one of the reef’s other predators, and he enjoys a diet of fish and crustaceans. When on land he’s still likes to indulge in good, responsibly harvested seafood. He’s also got a sweet tooth, especially for anything involving tropical fruit and cream. So I’ll be making a spicy seafood bisque served with crusty grilled bread and an Asian-inspired salad. For dessert, I’m make my own recipe for banana pudding.

This Spicy Seafood Bisque is very easy to prepare, and it is one of my favorite dishes to make for guests. I replace the tomato juice and hot sauce with spicy V8 (the low salt version).  I always serve it with a loaf crusty bread that I slice, brush with olive oil or melted butter and grill either outside or on my stove top grill pan.

An Asian Salad with oranges and water chestnuts makes a perfect accompaniment.

Silvia’s Banana Pudding

1/3 cup flour

2/3 cup brown sugar

2 cups milk

2 egg yolks

2 T butter

1 tsp vanilla

1 cup heavy cream, whipped until stiff peaks form

4-6 bananas, slice (they should be fully ripe but not mushy)

Vanilla Wafers  (approximately half a box)

To make the custard:

Combine flour, sugar, and milk in a pan, cook over medium heat until thick and bubbly stirring frequently. Let it cook for about a minute at this stage then remove from heat. Stir about a cup of the hot mixture into beaten egg yolks. Return egg mixture to pan and bring to a boil. Let boil, stirring frequently for two minutes. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla. Cool to room temperature. (To speed this up, I put the pan into a large bowl filled with ice and stir frequently. Once the mixture has cooled, fold in whipped cream.

To assemble:

Layer the bottom of a 2 qt casserole dish with vanilla wafers. Cover with banana slices. Then layer on 1/3 of the custard. Repeat two times. Cover and chill for at least an hour.

Wet: Reef’s Guardian by Silvia Violet

Brett Leland serves as the director of an underwater research station located near one of the world’s last healthy coral reefs. His life’s work is focused on protecting the reef and discovering why it has remained healthy as others are failing. But his university plans to sell the research station, and someone is trying to sabotage his final mission.

Setiwan Maramis is one of the legendary shape shifting guardians of the reef. He’s been watching Brett since the scientist first came to the station, and he wants Brett as both an ally and a lover. He is forbidden to reveal himself to humans, but when an enemy puts Brett’s life in danger, Setiwan follows his heart rather than the dictates of his people.

Reef’s Guardian will be here soon!

Reef’s Guardian will be here very very soon. Here’s a little taste…..

Blurb:

Excerpt:

“We can’t destroy the station.” Setiwan paced the length of his father’s office. Being on land too long always made him restless. He needed to get back in the water that afternoon even if only for a swim.

His father shook his head. “If the station falls into the Stanley Corp’s hands, we’ll have no choice.”

Seti fought the urge to yell. Why wouldn’t anyone listen to him? “If we fund a research team, the university won’t sell it.”

“Possibly. They may simply want to be rid of the burden.”

Seti sank heavily into one of the upholstered chairs in front of his father’s desk. He glanced out the window but from this angle a matrix of tall buildings blocked his view of the beach and the ocean beyond. “There are still enough humans who care about the environment to raise an uproar. The academics don’t need more bad press. Not if they can get the money elsewhere, at least that’s what Dr. Leland thinks.”

His father arched a brow. “You seem quite enamored of Dr. Leland.”

Heat crept into Setiwan’s face. He didn’t want to discuss his interest in the researcher with his father. “He’s an excellent scientist, and he’s passionate about reef conservation. He would help us protect the reef.”

His father frowned. “He’s human.”

“So are most of the people who work for you.”

“They’re in our land-based offices, not on the reef. If we let the humans work with us underwater, they are certain to learn our secrets and that –”

“Is forbidden by Guardian law.” Setiwan just managed to keep from rolling his eyes. “I know. You’ve been quoting these laws to me since I was a toddler. When those laws were made, the current levels of pollution and climate change were unimaginable.”

Setiwan’s father sighed. “True, but I can’t make a unilateral decision to change our protocols.”

Setiwan squeezed his hands into fists. Why was his father so damn reluctant to take charge? “Who can change the policy if not you? You’re one of the most respected and powerful Guardians. You’re in a position to fund research which could help the reef and even transform other reefs whose Guardians have renounced their duties.”

“I will not simply ignore the laws that have guided our people for centuries.”

But he could if he wanted to. Few Guardians had even half his power or his business sense. He’d started ExploreSafe and made it into an internationally respected company providing environmentally friendly equipment for diving and marine research. His father still worked out of the original office in Indonesia, but they now had offices in Australia, Japan, and the US. His father wanted the Guardians to have resources and contacts in the human world. Why wouldn’t he use those now?

His father tapped a pen against his desk. Setiwan looked up, his attention back on the man in front of him. His father spoke again. “Imagine what would happen if knowledge of our abilities got out.”

Setiwan frowned. That would be disastrous. He could see the headlines now, ExploreSafe CEO Practices Witchcraft, Businessman Claims He Can Change Form. And yet, what choice did they have if they were going to save their reef? “We have no way of knowing how much worse the situation will get. We may reach a point where we no longer have the power to keep our reef healthy. My energy is drained daily simply from counteracting the effects of pollutants and overly warm waters.”

His father tapped the end of a pen on his desk, a rare show of agitation. “What exactly are you asking me to do?”

“I want you to give the university enough funding to keep the station running and let their researchers work hand in hand with us to protect our reef and others in the region.”

His father frowned. “I can’t promise you that, not without more evidence that these researchers are trustworthy.”

Setiwan barely kept himself from grinning. His father hadn’t said no. He was actually considering his idea. What his father didn’t know was that Seti had extensive knowledge about Brett Leland’s research as well as the work of other research teams who’d spent time on the station.

Every time a new group of scientists arrived, Seti waited until they were all asleep and entered the station through the moon pool. He checked on the animals they’d taken from the reef and read through their records to ascertain their research goals. If their test subjects weren’t being properly cared for or their motives weren’t pure, he made sure little things went wrong, nothing to harm the humans but enough to hassle them and make them less likely to want to return.

The last time Brett Leland had come below, Setiwan took his explorations further. He’d crept into the station’s bunk room and watched Brett sleep. He couldn’t explain why the man called to him, but he hadn’t been able to stop himself from leaning down and brushing the man’s lips with his own. Brett had groaned, a low soft sound that had Seti stroking his cock and wishing he dared take his explorations further.

“I’ll go on board and talk to them.” Setiwan’s heart pounded. No other Guardian would dare make such a statement to his father. Hiding from humans while underwater was the number one Guardian law.

Giving An Alpha Male the Partner He Deserves

Aug 29, 2011 Filed under: BDSM, D/s, erotica, paranormal, shapeshifter, werewolf

I love alpha males. I fell in love with the romance genre in my teens as I devoured book after book with big, dominating dukes, earls, knights and Civil War soldiers. As paranormal romance grew in popularity, I discovered that werewolves and vampires make delicious alpha males, too. But the problem with so many of these late 80s/early 90s romances were the heroines. I loved these books when I read them but when I think back on many of them now, I realize that many of the heroines were TSTL (Too Stupid To Live). Pathetic simpering little things, just the type who would turn her ankle in high heels while running from a chainsaw wielding zombie.

Almost every story I’ve written whether m/f, m/m/f, or m/m has an alpha male hero. Their characters call to me and fuel my fantasies but I always fear sticking them with a TSTL partner, something they certainly don’t deserve. Nor do I believe such a pairing could last. The perfect partner for an alpha male whether he be gay or straight is someone smart and sexy and willing to stand up to all that dominant energy when necessary. Alphas don’t need doormats but rather true partners. An alpha male’s partner’s personality shouldn’t be overshadowed by the alpha. When I read a romance, I want both people in the relationship (or all three if it’s a ménage) to be equally interesting even if I chose the book for the delicious alpha.

I hope that I’ve succeeded in giving my alphas the partners they deserve. Officer Wolf of Savage Wolf sets his sights on a deer shifter. But Natalie is no missish little herbivore. She is a strong, sexy woman who knows what she wants and asks for it. She outsmarts Wolf numerous times and makes sure he knows that she is his equal even if she wants to be his servant in the bedroom. Read an excerpt below.

In Sex on the Hoof, the sequel to Savage Wolf, Drew Danvers is a dominating vampire detective who could easily overpower a weak-willed partner. But deer shifter, Jason Fleetfoot. is a perfect match. He’s nearly as strong physically and as a forensic chemist he has skills that Drew admires. Jason isn’t willing to simply be a bloodslave for his vampire lover. He wants a true partnership. Read an excerpt here.

Excerpt from Savage Wolf:

I’m Wolf, Officer Aidan “Wolf” Savage. I’m a werewolf. But unlike most of my kind these days, I’m one of the good guys even if I do scare the hell out of most people the first time they meet me.

I’m a damned good cop. If I’m tracking a criminal, he doesn’t stand a chance of getting away. I love the chase, the takedown, the chance to be scary-as-hell, but there’s one thing I hate about this job: stakeouts.

That’s what tonight is all about, sitting in a hot, muggy car, eating doughnuts and watching the woods for signs of life. Man what I wouldn’t give for a beer right now. And a warm house and a warm woman. OK, that train of thought isn’t doing a damn thing for me. Because my partner and I are stuck right here, until we see something, or the sun comes up.

Jacobson, my partner, crushes his paper coffee cup and tosses it in the bag that serves as a trashcan. “I so don’t want to do this shit tonight.”

I don’t think his comment deserves a response so I take a sip of my own coffee, which is damn near empty too.

Jacobson stares hard at the fence outside his window. “Do you actually think we’re going to see anything? Anyone could have dumped those bodies by the park. Why would they come back now?”

We’re parked along the outer perimeter of City Park. In its heyday it was a place for city residents to relax, have a picnic, get some exercise, and remember what trees actually looked like. When the economy went south, the city stopped maintaining it. Now it’s an overgrown eyesore used primarily by the homeless, drug addicts, and kids looking for a thrill.

The department is constantly getting complaints about the vermin that thrive in the undergrowth, both animal and human. But recently, the volume of calls about trouble in the park has increased, and two teenagers were found dead at the park’s northern gates last night. They’d been shot, execution style.

I take another sip of coffee before responding to Jacob’s questions. “We’ve had too many complaints and none from the usual suspects. Something’s up.”

“Gang initiation?” Jacobson suggests.

I shake my head. “I don’t think so.”

His eyes narrow. “You smell something, don’t you?”

I nod. Under the smells of sex, beer, and greasy food, there’s an odd chemical odor. I can’t place it, but I’m certain it doesn’t belong in the park. It hadn’t been there a few months ago when I’d pulled the short straw and been sent to run off a bunch of kids who’d come out here to party.

Before I can describe the smell to Jacob, I hear distant footsteps pounding the pavement. “Someone’s running this way. Someone fast.”

Jacob nods. I doubt he can hear a thing, but he’s learned to trust my non-human ears without question. A few seconds later, a woman comes into view. She’s wearing a sundress and a pair of high-heeled sandals so I doubt she’s running for her health. Not that any sane woman would be in this part of town at night.

She has straight, reddish brown hair that swings past her waist. Her heavy round breasts are barely contained by her dress. Long shapely legs reach out for the ground, making my cock sit up and say hello. Her strides are so long she’s practically leaping.

She’s moving faster than any human should be in shoes like that. The wolf inside begs me to chase her for the sheer thrill of apprehending such a hot piece of flesh. But my cop instincts tell me this woman is our key to what’s actually going on in the park.

Jacobson reaches for the door handle, but I lay a hand on his arm, stopping him. “Not yet.”

“She’s not out for an evening jog, Wolf. Someone’s chasing her.”

“Exactly. And we need to know who and why.”

Jacobson frowned. “While letting her get killed in the process?”

I know my partner’s right to protest, but my instincts tell me to take the risk.

The whine of a motorcycle engine grows louder. The woman runs past us and reaches the entrance to the park at the end of the block. The motorcycle driver guns his engine. He’s only a block away. I watch as he pulls out a gun.

“Now?” Jacob asks.

“Now.”

We exit the car and scale the fence, dropping down into the park, making our way through the thick undergrowth until we see the path. The motorcycle turns into the park and blows past us.

The woman darts into the woods up ahead. As she disappears, I swear I see the upraised white tail of a deer.

The driver fires a shot into the woods. Jacobson raises his gun and aims for the bike’s tires. He misses. My heart pounds. If my instincts were wrong, if this woman died because I hesitated, I’ll never forgive myself.

Suddenly an enormous stag leaps out of the woods directly in the motorcycle’s path. The driver swerves. The bike falls on its left side, crushing the driver under it, as it skids to a stop.

My werewolf speed brings me to the carnage ahead of Jacobson, I touch the driver’s neck, checking for a pulse. Nothing. He’s dead.

I turn toward Jacobson and shake my head. The deer lies several feet ahead, his legs twitching. I ready my gun to put him out of his misery, but I stop cold when his scent hits my nostrils.

Jacobson reaches for his weapon. “Shouldn’t we –”

I hold up my hand signaling him to stop. “He’s a shifter.” I start to tear off my uniform, preparing to shift. Now I know why I’d seen a white tail disappear into the woods. The long legs, the hair the color of a deer’s fur, the superhuman speed. Our runner’s no more human than I am. I turn to Jacobson. “Call this in and get us some backup. I’m going after the woman.”

“Wait,” he calls, but I’m already in my lupine form. I breathe in the scents of the night, damp leaves, warm earth, a few rodents. Then I catch her scent, deer mixed with the delicious musk of sweaty human female. My wolf salivates, eager for a chase.

I keep my nose low to the ground until the scent grows stronger. My ears prick. I can hear her breathing. I’m close. So close. She’s hiding, but I know I’ll flush her out. I wait for several long seconds.

She bursts from a tangle of bushes twenty feet or so ahead. And the chase is on. I tear after her, my wolf rejoicing in the freedom to run, to chase, to catch. But while my wolf is hungry for deer meat, my human side is hungry for this female in a whole different way.

I’m closing in. Her scent surrounds me. Sweat and fear and… whoa… sex. Bambie is as turned on by the chase as I am. Maybe this interrogation is going to be a whole lot more fun than I’d imagined.

Guest Blogger: Cynthia Sax

Cynthia Sax is my guest today and she’s got quite a suprise for us. She’s managed to snag a few minutes with three very intriguing officers of the law…..

Badge Bunny

Three very large men in uniform stride into the suddenly smaller interview room. They grab metal fold up chairs, carefully positioning themselves in front of Cynthia so they don’t touch each other. The chairs creak as they sit down.

Officer Wright: Fuck, Sarge. Give me some breathing room, will you?

Officer Sarge: Go to hell, dog lover. (shuffles his chair farther away)

Cynthia: Okie dokie then. Thank you all for coming here today. We will—

Officer Drake: Why the hell are we here? (folds his big arms in front of him) You do fuckin’ know that the bloodsuckers are draining school kids dry as we speak, don’t you? Every minute we’re here, people die.)

Cynthia: (feels guilty) Ummm…this will only take a couple of minutes.

(The officers glance at their watches)

Cynthia: You’re all part of the Protect and Serve series—

Officer Drake: Lies and bullshit. Next question.

Officer Wright: (grins) Mr. Tough Guy over there (jerks a thumb in Drake’s direction) is banging a bunny though.

Officer Drake: At least I’m not fuckin’ the dog. (mumbles) Damn appropriate expression for the incompetent asshole.

Officer Wright: Dogs are fierce, and—

Officer Drake: She’s a beagle! What’s she going to do? Lick the perps to death?

Officer Wright: (face grows soft) With that big sloppy tongue. Hmmm…

Officer Drake: (rolls eyes) If you get a hard on, asshole, I’m leaving.

(Sarge leans toward Wright.)

Officer Wright: (shoves him away) Fuck, Sarge. Give me some fuckin’ space. That blood demon’s creepy styles rubbing off on you, or something?

Officer Sarge: He isn’t rubbing me. (voice high and squeaky) I’m not gay!

(Drake and Wright stare at him)

Cynthia: About Officer Savage—

Officer Drake: He’s okay. Next question.

Officer Wright: Good cop.

Officer Sarge: Very rugged.

(Drake and Wright stare at Sarge)

Officer Sarge: Tough, I mean tough.

Officer Drake: (looks at watch) Time’s up. (stands) We’re done here. (the other officers get to their feet)

Cynthia: I have a few more questions… (watches them file out the door)

Officer Drake’s story is told in Badge Bunny. Officer Wright’s story, Legal Beagle, will be released in September. Officer Sarge’s story has not yet been written. And you all know that Officer Savage appears in Silvia’s Savage Wolf.

Thank you Silvia for hosting me here today. Does anyone have any questions for the boys in blue?

An Erotic Excerpt from Seduction of the Captain

Aug 20, 2011 Filed under: BDSM, book release, erotica, sci fi, shapeshifter Tags: , , , , , , ,

Here’s another taste of my recently released BDSM sci fi story, Seduction of the Captain……

Blurb:
Kajinek is a Lalatian Dominant who must feed on fear, pain, and sex for survival. Since leaving his homeworld, he hasn’t met a woman who could truly satisfy his needs.

Mercenary captain Saida Alexander needs a pilot for the most dangerous mission she’s ever undertaken. She chooses Kajinek, because he’s reputed to be the very best. She never suspects that he’ll awaken the submissive desires she’s ignored for years.

When Saida knocks on Kajinek’s door, he senses that she’s the partner he’s been looking for. He agrees to fly her ship under one condition; she must personally feed his darkest desires. Can Saida give in to what her body wants or will submitting sexually shatter the careful control she wields over the rest of her life?

Excerpt:
Kajinek followed Saida down the corridor toward their quarters, fighting the urge to throw her over his shoulders and run just to get there a few seconds faster. His cock felt like an iron rod in his pants, and the need to take her burned through his veins. At every stop along the tour, she‟d managed to brush against him, lean over him, flaunt her body at him, all without seeming to do a thing.

When her ass had brushed his cock as she stepped back into him while reaching for an overhead hatch, he‟d almost lost it. He‟d planned to introduce her to more of his implements of torment that night. He‟d wanted to work her up, make her beg, make her acknowledge what she was to him, but that would have to wait until he got some relief. The second the door to her quarters was closed, he was going to take her hard and fast. Then he was going to torment her until she surrendered her very soul.

Saida laid her palm against the sensor beside her door. Kajinek smiled when he noticed her hand trembling. He breathed deep, drawing in a satisfying stream of hunger and fear.

The door slid back. Saida stepped through. He stepped in behind her, so close they were nearly touching. She smacked the interior sensor. The door slid closed ever so slowly. Kaj didn’t move. Neither did Saida. The door clicked shut.

“Full privacy screens.” Saida’s voice was low and husky.

The control computer responded. “Confirmed.”

Kaj grabbed her shoulders, spun her, and slammed her back against the door. He crushed his lips to hers in a brutal kiss. He wasn’t interested in finesse or seduction or even forcing her submission—he simply wanted. Wanted what she‟d been flaunting all night, wanted relief from the hunger that raged through him.

“Fuck me,” Saida demanded, arching her hips to slide her pussy along the hard length of his cock.

He felt the heat of her through her suit and his pants. But that wasn’t enough. He needed her naked; he needed to be inside her. He needed to make her scream. But he couldn’t seem to tear himself away from her mouth. They bit and sucked at each other. Their tongues were like weapons fighting to devour each other. She dug her nails into his back, tearing into him like the claws she could form. He groaned and used his hips to pin her to the wall while he ground his cock against her pussy lips, which were as clearly defined against her suit as if she were already naked.

She growled and bit his lip hard enough to draw blood. Pleasure jolted through him. He might not need pain like a submissive did, but he‟d been taught to appreciate any heightening of sensation. He sucked her tongue into his mouth so hard, she groaned and bucked against him, trying to get him to move, working her clit against the hardness of his shaft. He drank down her fierce need, wanting more, wanting her surrender, wanting to eat her up.

She raked her nails down his back—no longer fingernails, but claws—ripping the fabric of his shirt. He gasped and pulled away from her. Her eyes burned with passion, but they still looked human. “Saida?”

Her need assaulted him, nearly making him choke. She struggled to draw in air. “I’m controlling it. Some of my lovers…like the…danger. I thought you…would too.” She worked the fastening of his pants. Once she got them open, she shoved them over his hips, freeing his cock.

She wrapped her still-clawed hand around his cock and slid it up and down. He didn’t think it was possible to get any harder, but she proved him wrong. He was supposed to be the one who inspired fear, the one who fed his partner‟s need for danger, but the sight of her claws wrapped around his cock was making him hotter than he‟d thought possible. If she didn’t stop soon, he was going to come.

“Enough.” He closed his fingers around her wrist. She released him, but she trailed one of her claws down the length of his cock, barely skimming the delicate skin. He sucked in his breath. His cock jerked, reaching for her touch, wanting the danger she offered.
Saida chuckled. “I knew you were addicted to danger.”

Anger burned inside him. How the hell had she gotten the upper hand? As soon as he‟d slaked the lust burning through him enough to think again, he was going to torture her until she begged to serve him. He‟d make her his slave. He looked up, letting her see the anger burning like fire in his eyes. “You have no sense of self-preservation.”
